Paris Mountain State Park is the closest state park to Travelers Rest: about 7.3 miles by the short road route from the community, measured from our own address rather than estimated. There is a second common route that runs closer to 9.5 miles, so which number your phone shows depends on how it sends you.
This guide covers what is actually on the mountain, what it costs, and the rules that catch visitors out, because several of them are the kind you only find out about at the gate. It is written from the Travelers Rest side.
How Far It Actually Is
The park entrance is at 2401 State Park Rd, Greenville, SC 29609, on the north side of Greenville rather than through it. From Village West that is roughly 7.3 road miles by the shorter route and about 9.5 by the longer one.
We are not going to publish a drive time. Traffic on the connecting roads varies enough by hour that a single number would be close to meaningless, and this site's standing rule is that we do not quote a commute we have not sat in ourselves. Map it from your own address at the hour you would actually go.
One thing worth being straight about, since we are a rental community and this is our own marketing: being in Travelers Rest is not a shortcut to this particular park. Paris Mountain sits on the Greenville side, so plenty of Greenville addresses are closer to it than we are. What Travelers Rest genuinely does put you nearer to is everything north of here, which is the next section.
Where It Sits Among the Other Parks
Travelers Rest has four genuinely different outdoor options in reach, and they are not interchangeable.
- Paris Mountain is the everyday one. Close enough for an evening rather than a planned day out, and the only one of the four that combines a swimming lake with a mountain biking trail system.
- Jones Gap is river and waterfall hiking up in Marietta, inside the Mountain Bridge Wilderness Area.
- Caesars Head is the roadside overlook, plus Raven Cliff Falls, the tallest waterfall in South Carolina at over 400 feet.
- Table Rock is the classic Upstate summit hike and a full day. It has a summer swimming hole of its own.
Jones Gap, Caesars Head and Table Rock are all up US-276 and north. Paris Mountain is the other direction, toward Greenville. That distinction matters if you are planning a day around one of them.
What Is Up There
The park covers 1,700 acres and holds four bodies of water: Lake Placid, Mountain Lake, Buckhorn Lake, and North Lake, also called Reservoir #3. Lake Placid is the one with the swimming area and the day-use activity around it; the others sit further back and are quieter for it.
The Trails
These are the park's own figures, from its trails page, including which trails permit bikes.
| Trail | Length | Difficulty | Bikes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sulphur Springs Trail | 3.8 mi | Strenuous | Hiking only |
| Brissy Ridge Trail | 2.9 mi | Moderate to strenuous | Yes |
| Sassafras Trail | 2.3 mi | Moderate | Yes |
| Kanuga Trail | 2.0 mi | Strenuous | Yes |
| Mountain Creek Trail | 1.3 mi | Moderate | Yes |
| North Lake Trail | 1.2 mi | Moderate | Yes |
| Pipsissewa Trail | 1.0 mi | Strenuous | Yes |
| Lake Placid Trail | 0.75 mi | Easy | Hiking only |
| Fire Tower Trail | 0.4 mi | Easy | Yes |
| Turtle Trail | 0.4 mi | Easy | Yes |
There is an eleventh trail, the Fire Tower Little Spur, which the park currently lists as closed. Its advisory reads: "All trails at Paris Mountain are open, except the Fire Tower Little Spur Trail." Check it before you count on that spur.
A few things fall out of that table.
This is a real mountain, not a greenway. Four of the ten open trails are rated strenuous and Sulphur Springs, the longest, is one of them. If your reference point for local walking is the flat, paved Swamp Rabbit Trail, the two are not comparable.
The easy tier has a catch. Lake Placid, Fire Tower and Turtle are all rated easy and none is longer than three quarters of a mile. Lake Placid and Turtle are the genuine short-legs options. Fire Tower is not: the park's own description says "You will climb 400 feet in elevation" across those 0.4 miles. Easy by rating, steep in practice.
The two longest hiking-only trails are the ones riders need to know. Sulphur Springs at 3.8 miles and Lake Placid at 0.75 are listed as Hiking Trail. Everything else on the list permits bikes.
The park's published mileage does not reconcile, so plan from the table and not the headline. Its main page advertises 17 miles of hiking and biking trail. Its FAQ says it has "15 miles of shared use trails." The ten trails on the trails page sum to about 16 miles, and the eight that actually permit bikes sum to about 11.5. Those are four different numbers from one operator, and the FAQ's 15-mile shared-use figure is the one its own trail listings contradict most directly. We are not going to guess which is right. The per-trail rows above are the most specific thing the park publishes, so use those.
The Biking Rule Most Visitors Miss
Paris Mountain is a serious mountain biking destination with a scheduling rule that is easy to get wrong.
Bikes are not allowed on Saturdays. The park's FAQ states it plainly: "Mountain biking is allowed every day except Saturday." If Saturday morning is the only time you ride, this is not your park, and finding that out at the trailhead with a bike on the rack is a wasted trip.
The flip side is a detail almost nobody outside the local riding community knows. The same FAQ notes that "the Park stays open on Tuesday evening in the Winter for those who like to mountain bike in the dark." Note the wording: in the dark. This is not a lit park, so that is a lights-and-know-the-trail proposition, not a casual after-work spin.
Swimming, Paddling and Fishing
The park has one swimming area, open during the summer months, on Lake Placid. It is a cool-water mountain lake rather than a pool, which is the appeal. No dogs are allowed in the roped-off swimming area.
Do not bring your own boat. The park is explicit: "Private boats are not allowed in the park lake." What it offers instead is self-serve rental, with kayaks, paddleboards and pedal boats available daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in season. If you own a kayak, it stays on the car here, so plan a different lake for it.
Lake Placid has bank access most of the way around with parking nearby, so fishing does not require a boat or a long walk in with gear. A valid South Carolina fishing licence is required.
Camping, and What It Actually Requires
There are 39 paved campsites, 13 of which have tent pads, plus 5 trailside camping sites arranged around the North Lake Trail loop.
This is not spontaneous camping, and the requirements are worth knowing before you plan around it:
- Reservations are required, with a two-night minimum.
- Campers must keep a vehicle on site for the duration of the stay, along with proper equipment such as a tent or camper.
- The five trailside sites are reservable only by calling the park directly, on (864) 244-5565, between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The trailside sites are still the interesting ones, and having walk-in sites at all inside a park this close to a metro area is unusual. Just book them; you cannot decide on a Friday afternoon and turn up.

If You Are Looking at the Area
"Close to the mountains" appears on a lot of Upstate rental listings without a number attached to it. Ours is about 7.3 miles by the short route to the nearest state park entrance, and rather more to the ones up US-276. Now you can check that against anywhere else you are considering, which is the only reason a rental company should be writing a park guide at all.
If you want the in-town side of this, our guide to things to do in Travelers Rest covers downtown, and why Travelers Rest covers what living here is like day to day.
Village West is a community of new single family rental homes in Travelers Rest. The homes we rent are listed with floor plans, square footage and current starting rents.
