That is one block of South Main. We photographed it in August 2026 rather than describe it, because "charming downtown" is the phrase every page on this subject uses and none of them show you the street.
What the Census Numbers Actually Describe
Almost every page answering this question quotes the same handful of figures. Here they are, from the 2024 American Community Survey five year estimates for Travelers Rest city, with the margins of error most pages drop:

A median age of 22 should stop you. Travelers Rest is not a college town in the way anyone means that phrase, and it contains a continuing care retirement community, which pushes a median age up rather than down. The explanation is a municipal boundary.
The city limits contain a university
Travelers Rest annexed Furman University property into its city limits in the early 2010s, along with The Woodlands at Furman, a continuing care retirement community, and an apartment complex. The Greenville Journal reported in 2021 that those properties "account for a large chunk of the population growth" from 4,570 residents in 2010 to 7,788 in 2020, and that city officials put actual homebuilding inside the city at a modest 30 to 50 new houses a year.
Furman enrolled 2,554 students in fall 2024 by its federal IPEDS reporting. The ACS counts 8,370 city residents. Those two figures are not strictly comparable, one is a point-in-time headcount and the other a five year rolling estimate, but the scale is the point: a substantial share of the people the Census counts as Travelers Rest residents are university students living on a campus that was annexed, and that is the most plausible reading of a median age of 22.
None of that makes the Census wrong. It means these figures describe a municipal boundary, and a municipal boundary is not a neighborhood.
About the poverty rate
Competing pages list a poverty rate above 20% as a con and move on. It deserves more care than that, and the care does not point where a landlord would want it to.
The ACS estimates the poverty rate at 22%, with a margin of error of ±8.8 points at 90% confidence. That is an imprecise estimate rather than a wrong one, and imprecision at that scale is normal for a place this small. The same table puts median household income at $54,583 give or take $15,030.
The obvious next move would be to blame the students, and it does not hold up. The Census Bureau does not determine poverty status for people living in college dormitories, so on-campus students are outside that calculation entirely. Furman has a four year residency requirement and reports that 97% of its students live in college owned, operated or affiliated housing. The population that could mechanically inflate this figure is the 3% living off campus, and there are not enough of them to move it.
So read the number as what it is. Travelers Rest has households under real financial pressure, the same as the rest of Greenville County, and a rental listing that waves that away is not being straight with you. What a citywide figure cannot tell you is anything about the specific street you would be renting on.
What It Costs to Rent

Getting to Work
The mean travel time to work for people who live in Travelers Rest is 23.5 minutes, plus or minus 4. That is the most useful commuting number available, because it measures actual residents rather than a route somebody timed once. Your own number depends entirely on where in the Greenville area you are headed.
Most of that traffic moves on US 276, which runs through downtown as Main Street. It is the spine of the town, it carries commuters, school traffic and weekend park traffic on the same two lanes through the center, and it is the first thing longtime residents complain about.

Plan on driving. Greenlink runs fixed routes across Greenville County, but check its current route map against the specific address you are considering rather than assuming coverage, and do not commit to a household arrangement that depends on an answer you have not confirmed.
Schools
Travelers Rest is served by Greenville County Schools, the largest district in South Carolina. Travelers Rest High School is at 301 North Main Street, in town.
Attendance zones in Greenville County do not follow city limits and can change from one street to the next, so the only answer that means anything is the one for your specific address. The district runs its own lookup at Find Your School. Put in the address you are considering before you sign anything, and confirm it with the district rather than with a listing site, because listing sites cache zone data and zones get redrawn.

Healthcare and Everyday Errands
Prisma Health North Greenville Hospital is at 807 North Main Street, with 24 hour emergency care alongside primary care, pediatrics, radiology and lab services. For a renter with children or an aging parent, an emergency room this close is worth pricing into the decision.
Everyday shopping is better covered than the town's size suggests, and this is where several of the pros-and-cons pages are simply out of date. Travelers Rest has a Walmart Supercenter on Benton Road with groceries, a pharmacy and fuel, a Food Lion on Walnut Lane, and an Ingles on Geer Highway. You are not driving to Greenville for milk or a prescription.
What does take a drive is everything past the basics: a mall, department stores and specialty retail, most chain restaurants, and the large hospital campuses. Greenville covers those, and you will make that trip regularly.
Safety
Most pages answering this question quote a per-capita crime index and move on. Those indexes are worth reading carefully rather than at face value, for a reason that is arithmetic.
Crime rates divide incidents by resident population. Travelers Rest counts about 8,370 residents, and it also has a Main Street retail and restaurant district drawing from across the northern county, a hospital, a state highway carrying park traffic, and a university campus inside its limits. Incidents involving people who do not live here are still divided by the number of people who do, and the smaller the resident denominator, the more any single year moves the rate.
That is a caveat, not a verdict, and we are not going to tell you the town is safer than the data says. Go to the primary sources: the FBI's Crime Data Explorer publishes agency-level counts by offense and year, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division publishes the state's annual crime report. Read counts and categories rather than a composite score, then drive the specific street at different times of day.
The Tradeoffs
It is not cheap. New construction rent starts around $2,000 against a median household income in the mid fifties.
It is car dependent. Downtown is walkable. The town is not.
Growth is visible and ongoing. About 70% population growth between the 2010 and 2020 censuses is not a subtle thing to live through, and Main Street traffic, school capacity and construction are all part of the deal.
It is small. A compact downtown, a short restaurant list, and a drive for anything specialized. People who love it here love that. People who want options late on a weeknight will find the list runs out.
Trailside, off Main Street. A butchery, a taco place, a tasting room and a lawn is a fair picture of what the town does well and where it stops.
Weekend tourism is real. The trail, the breweries and the state parks bring people in. That is why downtown is good. It is also why parking is tight on a nice Saturday.
What to Check Before You Sign
The town-level answer only gets you so far. These are the address-level questions that actually decide it, and none of them can be answered by an article:
- School assignment for the exact address, via the district's Find Your School tool, confirmed with the district.
- Your real commute, driven at the hour you would actually drive it, to the place you would actually go.
- Deposit, application fee and any pet policy, in writing, before you apply.
- The utility split, specifically power, water, sewer, trash, and who handles lawn care and pest control.
- Transit, if you need it, checked against the current Greenlink route map for that address rather than assumed.
- The street itself, at night and on a Saturday.
